LANXESS high-tech engineering plastic production line put into operation
On April 27, Lanxess officially launched its first high-tech engineering plastics production line in Wuxi, China, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion strategy. The facility, built with a $25 million investment, is expected to produce 20,000 tons annually in its first phase. This new base is a key part of Lanxess’ plan to strengthen its position in the high-performance plastics market in China.
Dr. He Deman, Chairman of Lanxess’ Board of Directors, attended the official launch event and emphasized that this investment aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to enhance profitability. With annual demand for high-performance engineering plastics in China growing by over 10%, the new plant is set to boost sales of Lanxess’ engineering plastics by 50% within five years.
He also highlighted that China is currently the fastest-growing automotive market globally, driving a surge in demand for advanced materials. The Wuxi plant will produce Durethan (polyamide) and Pocan (polyester), which are widely used in automotive, electrical, electronic, and home appliance industries. By the end of the year, Lanxess plans to add another production line, doubling capacity. Ultimately, the Wuxi site could reach an annual output of 100,000 tons.
Lanxess’ innovative hybrid technology combines plastics and metals, enhancing the strengths of both materials while replacing traditional ones. This approach not only reduces weight but also lowers costs. According to internal data, the patented technology can cut component weight by 40% and production costs by 30%. The technology has already proven successful in Europe, where it is widely adopted by major automakers.
Now, Lanxess is bringing this advanced solution to China, aiming to better serve local customers and meet the rising demand in one of the world’s most dynamic markets. This move reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and close customer engagement.
