LANXESS high-tech engineering plastic production line put into operation
On April 27, Lanxess officially launched its first high-tech engineering plastics production line in Wuxi, China, which was built with a $25 million investment. The initial phase of the facility is expected to produce 20,000 tons annually, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion strategy in the Chinese market. This new production base is designed to strengthen Lanxess’ position in the growing demand for high-performance plastics in the region.
At the official launch event, Dr. He Deman, Chairman of Lanxess’ Board of Directors, emphasized the strategic importance of this investment, highlighting that it aligns with the company’s goal to improve profitability and meet rising market demands. According to recent data, the demand for high-performance engineering plastics in China has been increasing by over 10% each year. With the completion of the new plant, Lanxess expects sales of its engineering plastics to rise by 50% over the next five years.
Dr. He also pointed out that China is currently the fastest-growing market in the global automotive industry, driving strong demand for advanced materials. The newly launched products at the Wuxi plant—Durethan (polyamide) and Pocan (polyester)—are widely used in automotive, electrical, electronic, and home appliance sectors. By the end of the year, Lanxess plans to add another production line, doubling the current capacity. In the long term, the Wuxi facility aims to reach a production capacity of 100,000 tons annually.
Lanxess’ advanced hybrid technology combines plastics and metals, enhancing the strengths of both materials while reducing weight and improving processing performance. According to internal data, this patented technology can cut component weight by 40% and lower production costs by 30%. The technology has already gained success in Europe, where many car manufacturers have adopted it.
