Fatal MVA involving school bus in Newport Township 4-5-13
A serious accident involving a school bus and two Jeep vehicles occurred this morning, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The crash took place at the intersection of Route 173 (also known as Rosecrans Road) and Kilbourn Road. According to initial reports, the school bus ran a red light and was struck broadside by an open-top Jeep Wrangler. The impact caused the bus to roll onto its side, and it then collided with a Jeep Cherokee that was also at the intersection.
When emergency responders arrived, all the children had already exited the bus. A third alarm was called for life safety, and several ambulances were dispatched. Many of the students were transported to the hospital via another school bus, accompanied by fire department personnel. A Flight-For-Life helicopter was also on scene but did not transport any patients, as the Jeep Wrangler driver was pronounced dead at the location.
Local photographer Tim Olk captured some quick images from the scene, showing the wreckage and the aftermath of the collision. The Chicago Tribune reported that while the bus driver may have been running a red light, the injuries among the children were described as minor. Officials said most of the students were “walking wounded†and were taken to nearby hospitals.
Twenty-three children were transported on a second school bus with paramedics on board, while twelve others were taken by ambulance. Dr. Charles Nozicka, medical director at Advocate Condell Medical Center, stated that nearly all the children had been released by noon, with only one remaining for observation.
The crash has raised concerns about road safety, especially near schools. Residents are urging local authorities to review traffic signals and enforcement in the area. A full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
