Fatal MVA involving school bus in Newport Township 4-5-13

A serious accident involving a school bus and two Jeep vehicles occurred this morning, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The collision took place at the intersection of Route 173 (also known as Rosecrans Road) and Kilbourn Road. According to initial reports, the school bus ran a red light and was struck broadside by an open-top Jeep Wrangler. The impact caused the bus to roll onto its side and collide with a Jeep Cherokee that was also at the intersection. All the children on board were safely evacuated before the first fire crews arrived. A third alarm for life safety was activated, prompting emergency responders to rush to the scene. Several ambulances were dispatched, and many of the students were transported to the hospital via another school bus, accompanied by firefighters and paramedics. A Flight-For-Life helicopter was also sent to the location but did not transport any patients, as the Jeep Wrangler driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Tim Olk, a local photographer, captured some quick images from the scene, showing the wreckage and the aftermath of the crash. His photos provide a sobering look at the incident. The Chicago Tribune reported that the accident happened around 8:05 a.m. near Wadsworth, as the school bus was transporting students to Newport Elementary School. Officials stated that the bus may have been running late on the traffic light, leading to the collision. The impact was described as a "T-bone" strike, with the Jeep Wrangler being hit directly. The Jeep Cherokee was also severely damaged. The driver of the Wrangler was killed, while the children on the bus were mostly considered to be "walking wounded." Twenty-three students were taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville by a second school bus, with two paramedics on board and ambulance escorts. Another twelve students were transported by ambulance to other hospitals, along with two occupants from the Jeep Cherokee. Dr. Charles Nozicka, medical director at Advocate Condell’s pediatric ER, noted that most of the children had been released by noon, with only one remaining for further observation. It is unclear whether that child will need to stay overnight. The Tribune article includes video footage of the crash site, offering aerial views of the damage. A full gallery of images from the scene, taken by Chris Walker of the Tribune, is available online. The crash has raised concerns about road safety, especially near school zones, and authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
