The Argonne Laboratory Fire Department has recently been integrated into MABAS Division 10, expanding the regional emergency response network. The department operates from a single station located on the Argonne National Laboratory campus, a leading research facility just outside of Chicago. With over 1,250 scientists and engineers, Argonne is dedicated to tackling some of the nation’s most critical challenges in energy, environment, and national security.
The fire department is staffed by 25 full-time personnel who are equipped with two ambulances, two fire engines, a heavy rescue squad, a brush unit, the MABAS Division 10 Decon Unit, and a fire battalion. All suppression equipment is supplied by E-ONE, while the ambulances are provided by Wheeled Coach. A new ambulance, set to replace Ambulance 114, is currently on order and will soon be added to the fleet.
A recent update to the Decon Unit included a fresh coat of paint, updated signage, and internal mechanical improvements, including a new generator. The unit is maintained by Argonne staff and deployed when needed for hazardous material incidents or other specialized operations.
The fire station, located on the laboratory grounds, serves as the central hub for all operations. It's a well-maintained facility that reflects the professionalism and dedication of the team. The department plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of both the facility and its employees, working closely with regional agencies to provide rapid and effective emergency services.
