Ted's production of ultra-high purity aluminum to fill the domestic gap
Nantong Tide Electronic Materials Technology Co., Ltd. has made a significant breakthrough in the production of ultra-high-purity aluminum, marking a major step forward for China in this high-tech material sector. The Beijing Institute of Nonferrous Metals and Rare Earth recently sent a fax to the company, expressing its intention to gradually replace imported products with Nantong Tide’s ultra-high-purity aluminum, which meets or exceeds the 5N5 standard (aluminum content ≥99.9995%).
Since January this year, the company, located in Rugao Economic and Technological Development Zone, has been conducting trial production of ultra-high-purity aluminum. After four successful trials, the Beijing Nonferrous Metals and Rare Earth Research Institute expressed satisfaction with the product quality. In addition, twenty domestic and international research institutions have reached out to Nantong Tide, showing interest in potential collaborations.
Ultra-high-purity aluminum is a critical material in industries such as electronics and aerospace due to its superior conductivity, ductility, reflectivity, and corrosion resistance compared to regular aluminum. Previously, only a few Chinese manufacturers could produce aluminum with a purity of 99.999% (5N), and those capable of producing 99.9993% (5N3) or higher were virtually nonexistent. Globally, only Germany, the U.S., France, Russia, and Japan had the capability to produce such materials.
In 2002, the State Science and Technology Commission included “aluminum metal purification†in the 973 research plan. Nantong Tide partnered with Shanghai Materials College, investing 1 million yuan in research. The project gained attention from both the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the State Science and Technology Commission, securing 2 million yuan in funding. After over four years of research, the team improved the segregation efficiency of impurities during vertical directional solidification, significantly enhancing aluminum purity. The product was rigorously tested by the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics and met all international standards.
The success of this development has drawn widespread attention. German company Heraeus, a leader in precious metals, dental materials, and industrial sensors, tested Nantong Tide’s ultra-pure aluminum and praised its quality, stating it was comparable to that of international top-tier companies. In April, the company's quality supervisor visited twice, expressing interest in long-term cooperation. Similarly, Beijing Yiyan Yijin, previously reliant on French imports, has now tested Nantong Tide’s products and is planning to reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers.
Currently, global production of 5N5 ultra-high-purity aluminum is around 2,000 tons annually. According to Zhang Kuihong, general manager of Nantong Tide, the company will launch 10 new production units in October and plans to expand its capacity to 80 units within two years, increasing annual output to 960 tons. This growth will position Nantong Tide as Asia’s first ultra-high-purity aluminum producer and place it among the world’s leading manufacturers. China is set to transition from being an importer to becoming a key producer of super-high-purity aluminum.
