The largest domestic air compressor unit was born in Shenyang
On June 8, a reporter learned from the Shenyang Blower Group that the company's H596 compressor unit, a large-scale 52,000 cubic meter air separation unit developed and manufactured in-house, has successfully completed testing on its medium- and low-pressure cylinders. This marks a major breakthrough, as the unit is now the largest air pressure equipment in China, showcasing significant progress in the development of large drum compressors.
The air compressor is a critical component of the air separation system, which plays a vital role in various industries such as oil refining, ethylene production, fertilizer manufacturing, coal chemical processing, and metallurgy. Currently, the performance parameters and technical standards of domestic 40,000 to 60,000 class air separation plants have reached international levels. However, with the slowdown in the domestic steel industry over the past two years, the chemical industry has emerged as the largest consumer of air separation equipment and industrial gases.
The H596 unit was specifically designed for Zhongyuan Dahua Company in Henan Province, intended for their 52,000 cubic meter air separation plant. It was one of the key projects under last year’s "communist project" initiative and a flagship product for Shengu Turbine Company. The unit features medium and low-pressure cylinders that are over 5 meters tall and 25 meters long, with a rotor diameter of 1.2 meters. Each cylinder weighs more than 50 tons, making it one of the most technically challenging and complex units ever produced domestically.
This advanced air separation unit is set to be delivered to the Zhongyuan Dahua Shell Pulverized Coal Gasification Project, a methanol plant with an annual capacity of 500,000 tons. The successful development of the H596 represents a major milestone in China's efforts to localize high-end industrial equipment.
Although several companies in China produce air compressors, only a few, such as Shenyang Blower Group and Shaanxi Drum, are capable of designing and manufacturing compressors for large-scale air separation plants. According to Liao Bin, Secretary General of the Gas Separation Equipment Branch of the China General Machinery Industry Association, the largest domestically produced air compressor currently in industrial use is for a 48,000 cubic meter air separation unit. While this is impressive, units exceeding 50,000 cubic meters still pose significant technical challenges, often requiring imported components. This is due to the fact that when air separation units surpass 30,000 cubic meters, the design and manufacturing processes of the supporting compressors undergo fundamental changes, increasing complexity and technical demands. Domestically, there is still room for improvement in terms of efficiency and reliability.
Thus, the development of the H596 unit by Shenyang Blower Group holds great significance, marking a step forward in China's pursuit of self-reliance in critical industrial technologies.
