The domestic agrichemical companies aiming at the Southeast Asian Market Fair have become the first platform for bilateral economic and trade cooperation
Due to the well-developed agriculture in Southeast Asia and the high demand for agricultural inputs, Chinese agrichemical companies have increasingly turned their attention toward this growing market following the implementation of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area's Agreement on Trade in Goods. A reporter recently spoke with the Guangxi Convention and Exhibition Industry Association and learned that at the 2006 China-Southeast Asia Agricultural Production Information Fair held in Guilin from June 13th to 15th, over 180 domestic companies showcased a wide range of agricultural products, including pesticides, fertilizers, and farm machinery. These companies expressed strong interest in expanding trade and economic cooperation with Southeast Asian nations.
It is known that most Southeast Asian countries rely heavily on agriculture, with abundant arable land but limited local production of agricultural equipment and chemicals. As a result, they have long depended on imports, creating a significant market opportunity for Chinese agribusinesses. With strong complementarities between China and Southeast Asian countries in both agricultural products and production materials, there is great potential for collaboration. The need for a new platform to facilitate exchanges and cooperation has become more urgent than ever. Located at the heart of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, Guangxi serves as a key gateway for communication with Southeast Asian countries, making it an ideal hub for technological exchange and economic cooperation in the agricultural sector.
Recognizing the vast potential of cooperation with Southeast Asia, many Chinese agribusinesses have been actively seeking opportunities. Companies such as Shandong Haihua Group, Chongqing Win-Win Group, Guangxi Luzhai Fertilizer, and Guangxi Beihai Penshibao reserved early booths at the fair to present their products and technologies. They displayed items like pesticides, fertilizers, veterinary medicines, feed additives, harvesting and processing equipment, quality testing instruments, and agricultural environmental protection technologies. In addition, several meetings were held, including discussions on soil testing, fertilizer application, poultry disease control, and new agricultural technologies. After the event, over 20 companies planned to visit Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines to explore further business opportunities. Several investment and trade agreements were also signed during the fair.
Southeast Asian countries have also shown great enthusiasm for deeper agricultural cooperation with China. Representatives from the agricultural departments of Vietnam, the Philippines, and Malaysia shared insights into their market demands, product access regulations, and key investment areas, highlighting the growing mutual interest in building a stronger agricultural partnership.
