·The duckweed fuel car research has obtained national patents

On the 29th, it was learned from the Chengdu Institute of Biological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the “method of fermentation of duckweed to produce fuel ethanol” was patented by the State Intellectual Property Office. This method will form ethanol fuel in the future by extracting starch from the surface plant duckweed. It can provide power for motor vehicles.

Fuel ethanol is the fastest growing and largest biofuel in the biomass energy industry. It has the characteristics of mature production technology and wide range of raw materials for production. Adding an appropriate amount of fuel ethanol to the fuel can reduce the content of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas by 30.8% and 13.4%, respectively.

Duckweed has the advantages of high starch content, fast growth rate, easy cultivation, low material cost, no occupation of cultivated land, and no competition for food. It is a promising raw material for fuel ethanol production. However, due to the particularity of the composition and structure of the duckweed, if the duckweed is directly used for fermentation, there will be problems such as low ethanol concentration after fermentation, low fermentation efficiency, and poor utilization of raw materials.

Researchers at the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, invented a method for producing fuel ethanol by duckweed fermentation. The simple fermentation of duckweed resulted in rapid fermentation to produce ethanol, which increased ethanol concentration and fermentation efficiency and reduced production costs.

At present, the Chengdu Institute of Biological Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has established a duckweed field breeding base in Sichuan and Yunnan. The experimental team has achieved a maximum of 52.9% of duckweed starch under field conditions. The output of duckweed starch per mu of water is more than 800 kg, and the biomass of duckweed is up to 3 tons/mu.

According to Zhao Hai, a researcher at the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, 800 kilograms of duckweed can produce 520 liters of gasoline based on the conversion of two kilograms of starch into 1.3 liters of ethanol gasoline. Perhaps in the future, a car with "duckweed fuel" is no longer a dream.
