China built the first independent research and development of deep sea oil drilling platform

The JU2000, China's first 400-foot oil drilling platform, was officially completed and delivered to Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group Co., Ltd. on May 31. This advanced platform is fully automated and capable of drilling over 30 wells simultaneously. It can operate in water depths exceeding 100 meters and drill up to 122 meters deep. The successful development of the JU2000 marks a significant milestone for China’s offshore oil industry, transitioning from shallow-sea operations to deep-sea exploration. This achievement plays a crucial role in securing China’s long-term offshore oil resources and supporting its national energy strategy. In the global shipping industry, the construction of high-level oil rigs is often seen as a benchmark of a country’s shipbuilding capabilities. As floating "islands" at sea, these platforms must endure extreme weather conditions, including up to 18 typhoons. With rising oil prices in the 21st century, the offshore engineering sector, which had been relatively quiet for over a decade, has experienced a surge in demand. Offshore drilling equipment has become highly sought after. However, despite being a major maritime resource nation, China has historically faced limitations in its offshore oil extraction due to outdated equipment. Currently, domestic platforms only operate at depths of around 80 meters, with very few in service. Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Group has a long history of innovation in marine engineering. In the 1970s and 1980s, it built China’s first 30-meter jack-up drilling platform and later constructed four 100-foot III-type platforms for the U.S. market. In the 1990s, when the shipbuilding market slowed down, the company strategically expanded into offshore engineering. After years of effort, it established a strong presence in this field, building modules for Phillips, semi-submersible rigs for Norway’s OCEANRIGASA, and China’s first large-tonnage offshore floating production and storage tanker. It also became the first Chinese company to receive an international offshore project—designing and constructing a 1.5-million-barrel floating production and storage tank. With more than 20 years of accumulated technical expertise, Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry has emerged as a leader in China’s marine engineering sector. The JU2000 platform not only represents the company’s core technological breakthroughs but also marks China’s first step toward deepwater jack-up drilling technology. Its success has significantly elevated the profile of China’s shipbuilding industry on the global stage. This year, marine engineering is expected to account for 30% of Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry’s total sales. The company currently holds four contracts for similar drilling platforms. Notably, in early 2024, it signed a contract as the general contractor for the “Continental Shelf No. 6” drilling platform for the U.S. company NOBLE. This rig is designed to operate in water depths of 10,000 feet and can drill up to 35,000 feet, making it one of the most advanced semi-submersible rigs in the world.
