Chicago Still & Box 5-17-11
Last night, a Still & Box alarm was triggered at 3636 Grenshaw Street. The fire broke out on the rear porches of a three-story, six-unit building that appeared to be unoccupied. Engine 107 arrived as the second engine on scene and was directed to the back of the structure. They quickly deployed their deck gun to douse the flames before securing a hydrant located at the end of the alley.
Engine 38 was the first engine on the scene and took position at the front of the building. Meanwhile, Truck 48 ascended to the roof on the front side of the building. The intense fire severely charred the wooden deck areas, spreading across one side of the rear porches and even reaching the roof deck. Photos taken by Steve Redick clearly show the extensive damage inflicted on the upper deck.
Despite the severity of the blaze, firefighters managed to contain the situation efficiently. Engine 107 played a crucial role by using its powerful deck gun to suppress the flames before securing a water source. This strategic approach helped prevent further escalation and ensured the safety of nearby structures.
The incident highlights the importance of rapid response and coordinated efforts in firefighting operations. It also serves as a reminder of the potential dangers posed by vacant buildings, which can become breeding grounds for fires if not properly maintained.
For those interested in more visuals, Steve Redick has shared a small gallery featuring additional images from the scene. His photos capture the intensity of the fire and provide a glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by the Chicago Fire Department that night.
