Chicago Still & Box 5-17-11

Last night, a Still & Box alarm was sounded at 3636 Grenshaw Street, and Steve Redick captured the incident. The fire broke out on the back porches of a three-story, six-unit apartment building that seemed to be unoccupied. Engine 107 arrived as the second engine on scene and was directed to the rear, where firefighters deployed their deck gun to control the bulk of the flames before securing a hydrant at the end of the alley. Looking at the images, you can see how Truck 48 positioned themselves at the front of the building on Grenshaw, successfully laddering the roof. The intense heat caused significant damage, particularly to the deck areas on one side of the back porches, with the fire spreading across the roof deck. Engine 38 was the first engine on the scene and focused on the front of the building, while Engine 107 tackled the fire with the deck gun before establishing a water source. The photos clearly show the extent of the damage, especially the heavy charring visible on the upper deck. It's evident that the firefighters worked quickly and efficiently to contain the blaze before it could spread further. You can find more of Steve Redick's photos in his online gallery [link here]. This incident highlights the importance of prompt action by our local fire department in managing such emergencies effectively. It’s always humbling to witness the dedication of our firefighters who put themselves in harm's way to protect our communities. Their swift response undoubtedly prevented what could have been a much larger disaster. It's moments like these that remind us of the bravery and skill required in such high-pressure situations.
