CFD Ambulance 89 involved in collision – update

This just happened earlier today near 74th and Morgan Streets in Chicago. An ambulance from the Chicago Fire Department, Ambulance 89, was involved in a serious collision with an SUV while en route to the hospital. I arrived shortly after the incident and captured some images of the aftermath. The ambulance had been transporting a patient along with two family members when it got hit by the SUV. From what I could gather, both vehicles sustained significant damage. Emergency personnel were busy assessing the situation, and it looked like everyone involved—both the ambulance crew and the SUV's driver—had been taken to different hospitals for evaluation. Thankfully, none of the injuries seemed to be life-threatening. According to initial reports, there were six people injured in total. Two of them were Chicago EMTs who had been inside the ambulance at the time of the crash. The scene was chaotic but orderly, with firefighters and paramedics working efficiently to manage the situation. Witnesses mentioned that the ambulance had its emergency lights and siren on, indicating it was responding to an urgent call. The driver of the SUV reportedly needed assistance to get out of the vehicle, requiring what firefighters call a "door pop." Meanwhile, the front part of the ambulance took the brunt of the impact, leaving visible dents and damage. It’s unclear exactly what caused the collision, but early indications suggest both drivers may have been following standard protocols. I spoke briefly with a fire department spokesperson who confirmed that most of the victims were conscious and speaking with medics at the scene. They emphasized that while the injuries varied in severity, none appeared critical. The Tribune has more details on the story, including a photo of the scene. As someone who frequently covers incidents like this, it’s always concerning to see emergency vehicles involved in accidents. These crews put themselves in harm's way every day to help others, so incidents like these serve as reminders of their risks. I’ll keep you updated if any new information comes to light. For now, my thoughts are with everyone affected by this crash. Here are some photos I took right after the incident. You can also find additional images [here]. Stay safe out there!
