CFD Ambulance 89 involved in collision – update

This just happened earlier today—a serious traffic incident involving Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 89 at the intersection of 74th and Morgan. I was nearby when it all went down and managed to snap some photos that really capture the scene. The accident happened around 2 p.m. when an SUV slammed into the ambulance while it was responding to an emergency call. From what I gathered, the ambulance had its lights and sirens on, indicating they were racing to the hospital with a patient and two family members onboard. Unfortunately, the impact was so intense that both vehicles sustained significant damage. The driver of the SUV even needed to be extracted using specialized tools. Thankfully, none of the injuries seem to be life-threatening. Officials mentioned that all six people involved—two EMTs, the patient, and the two family members—were rushed to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. Most of them were conscious and talking to paramedics at the scene, which is definitely reassuring. Larry Langford, a spokesperson for the fire department, explained that one EMT was driving the ambulance while another stayed in the back tending to the patient. He didn’t have any details about the patient’s condition but confirmed that the EMTs were doing their best under tough circumstances. The Chicago Tribune has a full write-up with more specifics, and you can check out the photos I took right after the incident. There's a lot of damage to see—especially on the driver’s side of the ambulance where the collision occurred. After the dust settled, the SUV ended up resting awkwardly near a traffic light on the corner, requiring a “door pop” to free the driver. It’s clear this was no minor fender-bender. I also snapped a few other shots showing the aftermath—there’s something particularly haunting about seeing an emergency vehicle like this one looking so beat up. It’s a stark reminder of how dangerous these situations can be, even for first responders who are just trying to save lives. If you're interested in more visuals, I’ve uploaded additional images that give a better sense of the scale of the damage. It’s always tough to see something like this happen, but at least everyone seems to be in stable condition. Let’s hope they all recover quickly.
