Buffalo Grove house fire 2-25-11

At around 2 PM, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department (BGFD) received an emergency call from a homeowner who had just returned to find their house thick with smoke. By the time the deputy chief arrived minutes later, smoke was already visible, prompting him to upgrade the response to a Code 4. It wasn't long before BGFD Engine 26 and Battalion 4 were on the scene, initiating an interior firefighting operation. The fire seemed to have started in a rear bedroom on the second floor, spreading quickly to the attic and adjacent rooms. Firefighters managed to contain the blaze before it could fully engulf the first floor, preventing further damage. Mutual aid support was provided by neighboring departments including Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Arlington Heights, Palatine, and the Buffalo Grove Emergency Management Agency. I was present at the scene and captured several photos and a video. You can view the full image gallery [here]. One particularly striking moment was when the smoke turned white as firefighters launched an interior attack, hitting the flames in the back of the house. Tower 25 was positioned to vent the roof, an essential step in controlling the fire's progression. The intense black smoke billowing from the second floor became visible as firefighters broke the windows to gain better access. A backup water supply was connected to the tower, ensuring readiness for any potential shift to a more defensive strategy if needed. Meanwhile, a firefighter was seen tackling external hotspots near the rear of the house, working diligently to contain the fire. Later, the crew from Buffalo Grove Quint 27 emerged from the building to refresh their air supplies after completing ventilation and search operations inside. The aftermath revealed extensive fire damage to the rear of the house. Reports suggest the fire originated in a corner bedroom on the second floor. You can watch a video of the incident [here]. Pioneer Press covered the story briefly [here], while the Lake County News-Sun also featured a short article [here]. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of swift and coordinated emergency responses in managing residential fires effectively.
