Dana plans to close Wisconsin engine parts plant early next year

Dana Corporation of the United States plans to close its plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, early in 2013 and transfer its production to its factory in Danville, Kentucky.

The Milwaukee plant mainly produces gaskets for engines . The closure of the factory will result in the loss of about 150 employees. Dana intends to transfer a small number of employees to other factories. Dana currently has technology, manufacturing and production facilities in 26 countries around the world. It employs 25,500 people worldwide.

According to trade union members, the Danville plant employs approximately 195 people. The employees' salaries are generally lower than those of the Milwaukee factory. One obvious reason Dana shut down the Milwaukee plant is to cut costs.

In the first quarter of this year, Dana’s sales were US$1.977 billion, and sales during the same period last year were US$1.8 billion. Dana’s net profit in the first quarter was 70 million U.S. dollars, compared with a net loss of 30 million U.S. dollars in the same period last year.
