China's medical device industry has a market size of nearly 400 billion yuan

“At present, China’s medical device industry market is about 400 billion yuan in size, and is increasing at a rate of 20% per year. It is a veritable sunrise industry.” Fan Yubo, Chairman of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering, recently held the 2012 World Conference on Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. The conference with the theme of "technology for health" was held in Beijing from May 26 to 31. Top scientists and scholars in the biomedical engineering community from more than 80 countries and regions and scientific researchers from medical device companies are invited to attend the conference.

Biomedical engineering originated in Europe and the United States. In recent years, Asia, especially China, has rapidly emerged as an important force in this field. “The migration from the venue of the conference alone will reflect the importance and enhancement of biomedical engineering in Asia in China,” said Dr. Barry Allen, president of the International Federation of Medical Physics and Medical Engineering.

Professor Fan Yubo said that at present, more than 70% of China's high-end medical devices rely on imports. High-end knee joints and pacemakers are almost 100% dependent on imports.

“We have not yet completely bid farewell to the history of a train's syringe replacing a nuclear magnetic resonance instrument, imported high-end equipment, and exported low-end products. However, we should note that with the efforts in recent years, the structure of China’s medical device imports and exports is being optimized. More and more mid-range products have joined the ranks of exporters,” said Fan Yubo.

Taking Shenzhen Mindray Biomedical Electronics Co., Ltd. as an example, since its listing on the NYSE in the United States in 2006, it has insisted on investing 10% of annual sales in R&D. Now the products are exported to 196 countries and regions around the world, and overseas sales account for more than 60% of the company's annual sales.

At present, there are 15,000 medical device companies in production and more than 300,000 in marketing. The rapid development of the industry has a strong demand for professionals.

“More and more universities in our country set up this major. Because it is necessary to closely track the frontiers of biology, chemistry, materials and other disciplines, the training of professionals is an urgent task.” said Fan Yubo.
