China Drying Network News According to the analysis of the famous energy information company ICIS, the Middle East is accelerating to become the world's petrochemical production center. The company predicts that by 2017, there will be an additional 21.175 million tons of ethylene capacity in the Middle East. A new 300,000-tonne low-density polyethylene plant at Qatar Petrochemical Company in Mesayid has recently begun construction. At present, the company's existing two 200,000-tonne LDPE units are in full operation. The petrochemical project in Saudi Arabia is remarkable. Sabah Financial Group stated that Saudi Arabia has about 50 billion US dollars of petrochemical projects have been planned or are in progress. These projects are aimed at cultivating domestic industries in Saudi Arabia and not just satisfying the export of basic chemicals. The $20 billion Sadar project is the largest project currently being implemented in the Middle East. In 2011, Dow Chemical and Saudi Aramco established a Sadar joint venture. The cracker in this project will become the first Saudi cracker designed to use a mixture of ethane and naphtha. The Sardar project is expected to achieve an annual sales income of 10 billion U.S. dollars after a few years of production. The Sadar project, which includes 26 production facilities, is huge and will become the world's largest integrated chemical production plant. In addition, the Sadar project will help Saudi Arabia become the center of petrochemical downstream products. A 300,000-ton-a-year low density polyethylene plant of Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company started construction this year. Saudi Basic Industries owns 35% of Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company. The person in charge of the polymer business of Saudi Kayan Petrochemical Company stated that the products of this new installation will supply the global market, and some of these products are aimed at the Chinese market. He said that in 2012 global demand for polymers will increase by an average of 6%, which is higher than the growth rate of global GDP. The growth rate in the Chinese market will reach double digits. In Qatar, Qatar's petrochemical industry enjoys a good momentum of development due to its abundant natural gas resources. Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Petrochemical are jointly building a new petrochemical complex. The new complex includes a steam cracker of 1.4 million tons a year. The raw materials needed for the plant will come from local natural gas plants. The total investment of the consortium is US$5.5 billion and is expected to be completed by 2018. It is reported that the combined capacity is 850,000 tons of high density polyethylene, 430,000 tons of linear low density polyethylene, 760,000 tons of polypropylene and 83,000 tons of butadiene. Products will be mainly exported to high-growth markets such as Asia, Africa and Latin America.
