Promoting the Use of Ethanol Gasoline in Vehicles Reveals Henan Province's Annual Output of Zhongyuan Oilfield in 8 Months
Since August, several provinces in China, including Guangdong and Liaoning, have faced tightened refined oil supplies due to natural disasters and rising global oil prices. However, Henan Province has managed to avoid a similar situation, largely due to its early adoption of vehicle ethanol gasoline. According to the Office of Promoting Car Alcohol Gasoline in Henan, from November last year to July this year, the promotion of ethanol gasoline saved one year’s worth of crude oil production for Zhongyuan Oil Field.
Data from the Provincial Development and Reform Commission shows that using ethanol gasoline can save 5% to 10% compared to regular unleaded gasoline. This means that for every liter of ethanol gasoline used, approximately 0.1 liters of traditional gasoline is saved. With an average monthly sale of 150,000 tons of ethanol gasoline, the province saves about 15,000 tons of regular gasoline each month. Over eight months, Henan has sold 1.2 million tons of ethanol gasoline, equivalent to saving 4.188 million tons of crude oil—nearly matching the annual output of Zhongyuan Oil Field, which produced over 4 million tons in 2004.
The province began piloting ethanol gasoline in cities like Nanyang, Zhengzhou, and Luoyang in 2001. By the end of November 2004, the use of ethanol gasoline was fully implemented across the province, achieving a closed-loop system. Today, more than 96% of the fuel market in Henan uses ethanol gasoline.
Experts highlight the significant impact of ethanol gasoline on Henan, an agricultural province where grain surplus often becomes a challenge. While the government must store large quantities of grain and provide subsidies, farmers still struggle with low income despite increased production. Ethanol gasoline offers a practical solution by utilizing excess grain for fuel production, reducing dependency on imported oil and easing domestic shortages.
In regions currently experiencing oil scarcity, Henan's proactive approach to ethanol gasoline demonstrates a smart and sustainable strategy, not only addressing energy security but also supporting local agriculture and economic stability.
