High-end light trucks compete against each other

Foton Motor, China's first commercial vehicle brand, has emerged as a top player in the light truck segment after eight years of development. Known for its comprehensive range of commercial vehicles, Foton has recently launched a strategic move in the 2 to 4-ton light truck market with the Aolite MRT — a high-speed light truck built on an advanced platform. This model is directly targeting Jianghuai, a long-time market leader in this segment. The reigning king finally lowered its prices. In mid-October last year, mid-range light trucks that had previously driven JAC’s success saw their first price cuts in years. The average reduction per unit was around 800 yuan, but according to insiders, manufacturers imposed strict pricing controls, resulting in an actual average cut of up to 1,800 yuan per vehicle. For many years, the 2 to 4-ton light truck market remained relatively stable, but now even the market leaders are starting to cut prices. Last year, major players like FAW, Dongfeng, Jianghuai, Hongta, and Liuzhou sold over 6.3 million units, capturing nearly 50% of the market share. However, experts point out that competition in this segment has long been based on outdated technology, with maximum speeds around 70 km/h under full load — far below the standards required by modern logistics and China’s well-developed highway system. A Foton marketing official stated that the company’s recent price cuts and lack of promotions were aimed at countering the Aolite MRT. Since July last year, sales of the Olympic Bell model have grown rapidly, reaching 2,000 units by November, signaling a strong market encroachment on Jianghuai’s traditional dominance. What lies behind the three-year “transformation period”? Foton remains confident about the future of the MRT, believing it can challenge the market within three years. Compared to previous low-key strategies, this aggressive move signals a shift in approach. In fact, over the years, the Peptide (likely referring to a competitor) has gradually expanded its presence in the 2 to 4-ton light truck market. It is widely believed that they have used these trucks for transporting goods efficiently. The MRT features powerful engines such as the turbocharged 4BB1, 4BB2, 4BD1, 4HE1, and Perkins engines from Japan and the UK. Its chassis is based on enhanced Isuzu systems, improving overall load capacity. While it remains to be seen whether the Aolite MRT can dominate the high-end light truck market, it has already created significant disruption in the 2 to 4-ton segment, shaking up the market and challenging the status quo.
