Wet-Down for new squad in Deerfield
On Monday, January 11, 2016, the Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Protection District (FPD) conducted a wet-down ceremony to officially put their new Squad 19 into service. Despite the freezing temperatures and harsh weather conditions, which made it difficult to use water outdoors, firefighters and officers moved the new fire engine into the station. To continue the tradition, members of the crowd used a hardline inside the building once the rig was in place.
The event was a significant milestone for the department, marking the arrival of a state-of-the-art apparatus designed to enhance emergency response capabilities. The new unit, a Pierce Dash CF PUC, is equipped with advanced technology and features that will serve the community well in the years to come.
During the ceremony, the squad was also dedicated to the memory of FF/PM Brad Hytoff, a beloved member of the Deerfield-Bannockburn FPD who had passed away earlier that year. His family attended the event, and his parents placed a plaque on the driver’s door as a touching tribute. The dedication served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifice and commitment made by those who serve in the fire service.
Photos from the day capture the excitement and emotion of the occasion, including the moment the Hytoff family adorned the plaque and the heartfelt gesture of the parents hosing down the new engine. This event not only celebrated the arrival of a new piece of equipment but also honored the legacy of a fallen firefighter, reinforcing the deep sense of community and brotherhood within the fire department.
