House fire in Niles – 5/12/15

On Tuesday, May 12, 2015, around 1:30 PM, Niles firefighters responded to a serious fire at 8115 Ottawa Avenue. Upon arrival, the first units reported heavy flames and smoke coming from the rear of a two-story home, prompting an immediate upgrade to Code 4 — a working fire. A report indicated that someone was trapped on the second floor, but thanks to the quick actions of neighbors, the occupant managed to jump from a window and suffered only minor injuries. The rear of the house was easily accessible via a commercial parking lot located behind the residence on Milwaukee Avenue. While Niles crews prepared to enter from the front, Morton Grove Engine 5 (supplied by North Maine Engine 1) positioned their deck gun from the rear to assist in controlling the fire. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze within 15 minutes. Several mutual aid units were on scene, including Glenview Ambulance 7 and Truck 14, Des Plaines Truck 61, Morton Grove Battalion 4, Engine 5, and Squad 4, along with Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, North Maine Engine 1 and Ambulance 1, and multiple Niles companies such as Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Battalion 2, Ambulance 2, and Ambulance 3. Numerous photos from the incident are available online at shapirophotography.net and KSC711.smugmug.com. The images capture the efforts of firefighters, emergency vehicles, and the aftermath of the fire, showing the intensity of the response and the coordinated effort between agencies.
