House fire in Niles – 5/12/15

On Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at approximately 1:30 PM, Niles firefighters responded to a residential fire at 8115 Ottawa Avenue. Upon arrival, the first units encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the rear of the two-story home, prompting an immediate upgrade to Code 4, indicating a working fire. A report initially suggested that someone was trapped on the second floor, but it was later confirmed that the occupant safely jumped from a window with the help of neighbors, sustaining only minor injuries. The rear access to the home was excellent, as it was directly behind a commercial parking lot off Milwaukee Avenue. While Niles units prepared for entry from the front, Morton Grove Engine 5 (supported by North Maine Engine 1) positioned their deck gun from the rear to begin suppression efforts. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes. The incident saw significant mutual aid support, including Glenview Ambulance 7 and Truck 14, Des Plaines Truck 61, Morton Grove Battalion 4, Engine 5, and Squad 4, along with Lincolnwood Ambulance 15, North Maine Engine 1 and Ambulance 1, and several Niles units such as Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 2, Battalion 2, Ambulance 2, and Ambulance 3. Numerous photos from the scene were captured, showcasing the response efforts. These include images of Niles FD Engine 2R, Pierce fire trucks, a Spartan ERV engine, a Pierce Dash CF PUC tower ladder, hoses connected to a hydrant, and the aftermath of the fire.
