3 dead after Arlington Heights house fire 11-6-13

Several news outlets are reporting on a tragic house fire that occurred early this morning in Arlington Heights, resulting in the deaths of three people. The incident has raised concerns about safety and sparked an ongoing investigation into the cause of the blaze. According to the *Chicago Tribune*, the fire broke out overnight at a two-story brick home located on the 300 block of South Dunton Avenue. Emergency crews were called around 3:20 a.m., after a police sergeant detected the smell of smoke while driving through the area. When firefighters arrived, the fire had already spread throughout the single-family residence, and part of the second-floor rear collapsed upon their arrival. No smoke detectors were active when first responders reached the scene, though it remains unclear if any were installed. Firefighters managed to pull one victim from a downstairs bedroom through a window, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional victims were found inside the home and also declared deceased. Authorities from the Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office, along with local police and fire departments, are conducting a standard investigation into the fatal fire. A Cook County medical examiner is expected to arrive soon for further analysis. The *Daily Herald* reported similar details, noting that all three victims were found on the first floor of the two-story Cape Cod-style home. Fire Chief Glenn Ericksen stated that the fire had engulfed the structure by the time emergency personnel arrived, with parts of the second floor collapsing onto the lower level. One of the victims was reportedly buried under rubble from the collapsed section, according to a police source. The fire was initially discovered by a police officer who smelled smoke near the station around 3:15 a.m. No smoke detectors were triggered, and it's still unknown whether any were present in the home. Officials believe the fire started in a back bedroom, but the exact cause remains under investigation. Police Cmdr. Mike Hernandez emphasized that there is currently no indication that the fire was intentional or suspicious. “It’s a death investigation until we know more,” he said. The identities of the victims have not been released, as officials are still working to confirm them. Autopsies are scheduled for Thursday, and the Cook County medical examiner will conduct the examinations. Frank Soprano, an accountant based in Arlington Heights, confirmed that one of the victims was the homeowner, an elderly woman who had lived in the house for many years. He described her as a long-time resident and a person who was well-known in the community. As the investigation continues, residents in the area are being urged to remain cautious and stay informed about the situation. The community is coming together to support the families affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
