3 dead after Arlington Heights house fire 11-6-13
Several news outlets are reporting on a tragic house fire that occurred in Arlington Heights this morning, which resulted in the deaths of three individuals. The incident has drawn attention from local and regional media as investigators work to determine the cause of the blaze.
According to the *Chicago Tribune*, the fire broke out overnight at a two-story brick home located on South Dunton Avenue in the 300 block. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 3:20 a.m., after a police sergeant detected the smell of smoke while driving through the area. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home fully engulfed, with parts of the second floor already collapsed. No smoke detectors were activated when first responders arrived, though it remains unclear if any were installed in the home.
Fire officials reported that one female victim was rescued through a window and later pronounced dead at the scene. Two additional victims were found inside the house and also declared dead on-site. The Illinois State Fire Marshall’s Office, along with local police and fire departments, are conducting a standard investigation into the incident. The Cook County medical examiner is expected to send an investigator to the scene for further examination.
The *Daily Herald* added more details, confirming that all three victims were found on the first floor of the two-story Cape Cod-style home. When firefighters arrived, the structure was already heavily damaged, with portions of the second floor collapsing onto the lower level. One of the victims was reportedly buried under debris from the collapsed section, according to a police source.
The fire was initially discovered by a police officer who noticed smoke around 3:15 a.m. near the police station. No smoke alarms were triggered upon arrival, raising questions about the presence or functionality of such devices. Authorities have not yet determined the origin of the fire, but early reports suggest it may have started in a back bedroom. At this time, there is no indication that the fire was intentionally set.
Fire Chief Glenn Ericksen stated that investigators have no reason to believe the fire was suspicious. “It’s very sad,†he said, adding that the team will do everything possible to determine what caused the tragedy. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims, and autopsies are scheduled for Thursday.
Frank Soprano, an accountant based in Arlington Heights, confirmed that one of the deceased was the homeowner, an elderly woman who had lived in the home for many years. He described her as a long-time resident of the community.
As the investigation continues, residents remain concerned about fire safety and the importance of working smoke detectors. Local authorities are urging homeowners to check their smoke alarm systems and ensure they are properly maintained.
