Glenview Box Alarm 11-3-12
The Glenview Fire Department responded to a call about smoke in an unincorporated area of Cook County at 3521 Central Road just before 10 p.m. Witnesses reported that a fire had broken out on the third floor of a three-story apartment building, and that a resident was seen on the balcony, possibly considering jumping. Glenview Engine 7 was the first unit on scene and found heavy flames coming from the third-floor unit, with a frantic tenant on the balcony. The incident was quickly upgraded to a box alarm.
As firefighters prepared for a potential rescue, they calmly urged the resident not to jump. In a tense moment, the occupant managed to climb to the adjacent balcony and then dropped down one floor as firefighters positioned a ground ladder. The quick action helped prevent a tragic outcome.
The fire was quickly brought under control, though it did spread slightly to a neighboring unit. Three Glenview engines were actively pumping water at the scene, while Truck 14 provided rooftop access. Several mutual aid companies assisted, including Northfield Squad 29, North Maine Engine 1, Battalion 1, Niles Engine, Ambulance, Battalion 2, Morton Grove Engine 5 and Squad 4, Northbrook Truck 12, Wilmette Tower 26, and Mt. Prospect Engine 14.
Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro arrived at the scene but both reached it after the fire had been extinguished. Some photos from the event have since been shared online.
