Unique Station 2 for Newport Township
In Wadsworth, Illinois, within the northern region of Lake County, the Newport Township Fire Protection District serves an area covering 33 square miles. Their primary station is strategically located off Wadsworth Road just east of US 41. This bustling station is home to a variety of essential vehicles, including a tanker, two fire engines, a pumper squad, two ambulances, a utility vehicle, a staff car, an ATV, and a brush unit. To improve response times to the northernmost parts of their jurisdiction, the fire protection district leases a section of a barn from Doug Reno, one of their members.
Adjacent to the main station, you’ll find an auxiliary building where some of the more specialized equipment is stored. For instance, the crane truck is kept in a separate structure on a neighboring farm. Doug Reno himself is quite the collector of vintage fire trucks, and he houses several of these historic vehicles both on his property and on another neighbor’s land. Among the collection are several pieces of Newport Township Fire Protection District equipment, such as:
- A 1977 CF Mack engine with 4,000 feet of 4-inch hose. Unlike other Newport rigs, this one features a black cab roof. Originally from Ligonier, Pennsylvania, it was acquired thanks to the generosity of two department members.
- A 1951 Willys Jeep equipped with a 100-GPM front-mounted pump and a 150-gallon water tank, perfect for parades and special events.
- A beautifully restored 1969 Dodge Power Wagon W-300, which once served as the department’s brush rig.
- A 1981 R-Model Mack box truck functioning as a 'Heavy Rescue' unit, housing technical rescue team supplies.
- A 1988 R-Model Mack flatbed with a 6,000-pound knuckle boom crane, capable of carrying either a trench box or, when acting as a foam tender for the Quad 2 ARFF unit, bulk foam.
Doug’s personal collection includes:
- A 1975 Ward LaFrance Ambassador engine labeled for the Wadsworth Fire Department (Ohio), featuring a 1,250-GPM pump and a 500-gallon water tank, serial number 80-1129.
- A 1971 CF Mack engine that was refurbished in 1987 by Pierce for the Geneva Fire Department in Kane County.
- A CF Mack engine originally from Duncannon, Pennsylvania.
These vehicles not only serve practical purposes but also preserve the rich history of firefighting. For example, during a 4-11 alarm fire in Winthrop Harbor in the winter of 2008, Engine 1413 spent much of the day drafting water directly from Lake Michigan. Another memorable moment occurred during another fire in Winthrop Harbor, where the same engine was involved in a significant drafting operation, with Doug Reno himself keeping warm inside the cab.
