The largest HDPE plant produced in Asia is built
After the completion of Maoming Petrochemical's 1 million tonne/year ethylene renovation and expansion project, followed by the successful operation of the polypropylene plant, two major facilities were simultaneously constructed and put into production: a 350,000 tpa high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plant and a 640,000 tonne/year pyrolysis gasoline hydrotreating unit. These developments mark significant progress in the company’s efforts to enhance its petrochemical production capabilities.
The HDPE plant is currently the most advanced and largest-scale facility of its kind in Asia, utilizing domestic process technology. It incorporates the U.S. Chevron-Phillips loop pipe slurry process, enabling a single-line production capacity with a wide range of product varieties. The plant can produce over 20 types of products, including blown film, packaging materials, extrusion films, pipe materials, injection molding resins, and cable materials. These high-quality products find extensive applications in home appliances, electronics, and textiles, offering high added value. With more than 50% of the domestic demand currently met through imports, the new plant significantly reduces reliance on foreign supply and supports regional industrial development.
In addition, the pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation project has expanded the original capacity from 250,000 tons/year to 640,000 tons/year. This project employs a two-stage hydrogenation technology developed by Sinopec, using crude pyrolysis gasoline from the ethylene cracker as feedstock. The process produces hydrogenated gasoline and other by-products, which serve as essential raw materials for aromatics extraction units. This not only enhances the efficiency of benzene production but also strengthens the overall petrochemical chain, contributing to greater economic benefits and industrial synergy.
