Excerpts from herald-review.com: The Decatur Fire Department's Engine 6, the truck that firefighter Micah "Bubba" Wakeman rode to save countless lives, carried him on his final journey home on Tuesday. A 16-year veteran of the department, Wakeman lived in Mount Pulaski and had a deep love for farming. He passed away on June 13 after a tragic tractor rollover accident. At just 43 years old, he was a married father of four children. Firefighters from across Central Illinois gathered to pay their final respects to Wakeman, offering a heartfelt salute. As the ceremony unfolded, an honor guard carried his casket from the church, while others raised their hands in a slow-motion gesture of respect. The funeral procession moved slowly, led by squad cars from both the Decatur Police Department and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, symbolizing unity and support. The procession, filled with fire, police, and emergency vehicles, traveled a 3-mile route to the interment in Warrensburg. Along the way, the group passed under a ceremonial arch formed by two aerial ladder trucks holding an American flag that fluttered proudly in the breeze. The bright weather matched the tone of the service, which was more of a celebration of life than a mourning event. It was described as a tribute to a man who lived fully and made a lasting impact on many. Wakeman's friend Tracy Dyer reflected, “This isn’t a funeral—it’s a celebration. Of how one not-so-little man has made an impact here and all over the world, from Uganda to Haiti, Guatemala, and the Ukraine.†His strong Christian faith led him to volunteer on international missions and to become a foster parent for children in need. Colleagues described him as a caring, hardworking, and deeply compassionate man who gave his time and energy to help others at every opportunity. Although the atmosphere was upbeat, with moments of laughter and shared memories, the grief of losing such a beloved individual was evident. Some mourners could be heard sobbing as a message from his 20-year-old daughter, Ashton, was read aloud. She struggled to find the right words to express her feelings, saying, “For once, I’m lost for words. But what I can say is ‘thank you’—thank you, God, for letting us have some of my daddy in our lives, because not many people are blessed with someone like Micah Wakeman.†As the service concluded, a solemn silence fell over the church. A lone firefighter prepared to ring a bell nine times in three sets of three rings—a traditional firefighter salute to bid farewell to a fallen comrade. In a powerful show of solidarity, firefighters from Springfield and Champaign covered shifts at local stations so Decatur firefighters could attend the service. More than 100 active and retired members of the Decatur FD were present, showing the deep respect and camaraderie they held for their fallen brother.
