2nd Alarm Fire plus Haz Mat Box Alarm in Cary 3-6-13
An explosion occurred at 640 Industrial Drive in Cary on Wednesday, causing significant damage and injuring three workers. According to the Chicago Tribune, the incident took place at a paint manufacturing warehouse operated by Fox Valley Services. Cary Police Chief Steven Casstevens reported that emergency crews were called to the scene around 1:15 p.m. after an initial explosion. A second explosion soon followed, leading to structural damage, including the front of the two-story building being blown off.
The fire was eventually extinguished by 5 p.m., but the situation remained dangerous due to the presence of hazardous materials. A hazmat team was deployed as a precaution, given the nature of the facility. Three employees were taken to local hospitals, though their injuries were not considered life-threatening. One of the injured was later transported by helicopter to a burn center.
Local resident Jim Hursh, who owns Whitey’s Crane Rentals nearby, described hearing the first explosion and then witnessing heavy smoke and a second blast shortly after. He saw firefighters and ambulances rushing to the scene, with one person appearing to have facial burns. Cary Fire Department officials confirmed that no firefighters were harmed during the operation.
Tyler Tobolt, a local photographer, shared details about the response, noting that multiple towns were involved in the effort, and that the fire department requested a Haz-Mat unit due to potential chemical leaks. He also provided links to additional photos showing the aftermath of the explosions.
Scott Peterson, another eyewitness, added that the front wall of the building had been partially destroyed, and flammable tanks nearby were a major concern. Firefighters used large water lines and a tower ladder to control the blaze, while the area was evacuated for safety. Channel 5 and 7 aired aerial footage of the scene.
