Wheeling brush fire 3-31-14

It’s that time of year again… Larry Shapiro reports that the RED Center received multiple calls late Monday morning about brush fires near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Wheeling, stretching from 444 Carpenter Street all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, emergency services were responding to additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District, near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Fire crews in Buffalo Grove were also dealing with blazes near the tracks as far north as Route 22. In response, the railroad temporarily halted all train traffic through the area, and a train that had recently passed through was stopped for inspection. Despite the spread of the fires, all of them were under control within approximately 90 minutes. Here are some striking photos from the largest fire, which occurred behind 250 Carpenter Street, just south of Dundee Road.
