2-11 Alarm fire and EMS Plan I, 4-12-15 (more)
A fire broke out early Sunday morning (April 12) in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. Around 1:43 AM, the Main Fire Alarm Office received a Still & Box Alarm for a building on fire at 22nd and Wolcott Avenue, with reports of people trapped inside. First-responding units arrived within one minute of the alarm being called and immediately reported that the fire was already visible through the roof.
By 1:45 AM, the 4th Battalion Chief requested an EMS Plan I and confirmed that the fire had spread to all three floors. At 1:51 AM, Engine 2-2-1 took control of the incident and shortly after ordered a 2-11 Alarm. Throughout the early stages of the fire, multiple engine companies and ladder trucks were deployed, with several hand lines and master streams working simultaneously.
Just before 2:00 AM, crews were pulled back from the structure as a defensive firefighting strategy was implemented. Tower Ladder 5 and Engine 23’s deck gun were positioned in Sector A, while Squad 1A was stationed on Wolcott in Sector D. As the fire continued to grow, it eventually reached the cockloft on the B side around 3:00 AM, prompting the arrival of Tower Ladder 39 as a fourth master stream.
At this point, Engines 23, 18, and 39 were all actively pumping water on scene. Fortunately, all 21 residents of the building managed to escape without injury. While I may not have every detail completely accurate, this is my best recollection of what happened during the incident. Thank you for your time and understanding.
