Decatur Fire Department news

Excerpts from herald-review.com:

The Decatur Fire Department's Engine 6, the truck that firefighter Micah “Bubba” Wakeman rode to save countless lives, was also there for his final journey home on Tuesday. A 16-year veteran of the department, Bubba lived in Mount Pulaski and had a deep love for farming. He passed away on June 13 after a tragic tractor rollover accident. At just 43 years old, he was a married father of four.

Firefighters from across Central Illinois gathered to honor their friend one last time. As the funeral service unfolded, a solemn honor guard carried Bubba’s casket out of the church, while others raised their hands in a slow, respectful salute. The procession moved forward, led by squad cars from both the Decatur Police Department and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, symbolizing unity and respect.

The 3-mile journey to the interment in Warrensburg was marked by a large turnout of emergency vehicles. Along the way, the procession passed under a ceremonial arch formed by two aerial ladder trucks holding an American flag that fluttered proudly in the breeze. The bright, sunny day reflected the positive tone of the service, which was more of a celebration of Bubba’s life than a somber farewell.

Wakeman’s close friend Tracy Dyer described the event as “not a funeral, but a celebration.” She highlighted how Bubba’s impact reached far beyond local communities—his work with missions took him to countries like Uganda, Haiti, Guatemala, and Ukraine. He also served as a foster parent, helping children in need.

Known for his kindness, dedication, and hard work, Bubba spent most of his time helping others. While the service was filled with laughter and stories about his life, the sorrow of losing such a beloved man was also present. Some mourners could be heard sobbing as a heartfelt message from his 20-year-old daughter, Ashton, was read aloud.

“For once, I don’t have words to say how I feel,” she said. “But what I can say is ‘thank you’… thank you, God, for letting us have some of my dad in our lives. Not many people get to know someone like Micah Wakeman.”

Tears flowed as the service came to a quiet close. A lone firefighter rang a bell nine times—three sets of three rings—the traditional way firefighters honor and bid farewell to a fallen comrade.

In a gesture of support, firefighters from Springfield and Champaign temporarily covered fire stations in Decatur so that local firefighters could attend the service. More than 100 active and retired members of the Decatur FD were present, showing the deep bond and respect they had for Bubba.
