From legacy.com: A private funeral service will be held with no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that condolences be shared online at www.baranfh.com. Gregory J. Melyon was born on March 20, 1962, in the Calumet Region to Henry and Alice (Simala) Melyon. A lifelong resident of the area, he graduated from Bishop Noll Institute in 1980 and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Whiting. He followed in his father’s footsteps as a firefighter, joining the Gary, Indiana Fire Department, where he quickly became a standout. As part of Squad 2, one of the city's most elite rescue units, Greg responded to hundreds of emergency calls annually. His unit gained national recognition for its skill and dedication. When the tragic events of September 11, 2001, unfolded, Greg volunteered to help in New York City alongside fellow firefighters, supporting the FDNY during one of the most challenging times in American history. Over the course of his career, he rose through the ranks and eventually retired as Chief of Operations after 27 years of service. After retiring from the fire department, he transitioned into training, becoming an instructor at the BP Whiting Refinery, where he continued to share his deep knowledge of safety and emergency procedures. Greg was a proud member of the IAFF Local 359, the 5-11 Club of Chicago, the Fire Buffs of Illinois, and a founding member of the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago. He had a passion for collecting and photographing fire apparatus, amassing a large collection of memorabilia and die-cast emergency vehicles. Traveling was another of his favorite pastimes, and he enjoyed exploring new places and savoring local food. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In memory of Greg, donations may be made to the Fire Museum of Greater Chicago, located at 5218 S. Western Ave., Chicago, IL 60609. For more information, call (219) 659-4400.
